Obergurgl and Hochgugl together form the highest altitude skiing area in the whole of Austria. Obrgurgl , as well as Hochgurgl has a total of 55 kilometres of pistes. The descent from Hochgurgl to Obergurgl is six kilometres long with a drop in altitude of 1220 metres!
The festkogel bahn , a six persons gondola lift, leaves from just outside Obergurgl and in the village itself there is the Rosskar chair lift. This connects with the Plattachban that takes you further and over the magical 3000 metres altitude to the top of the Fest kogel at 3035 metres. Another chair lift leaves from Hochgurgl to the highest destination, the Wurmkogel, where from the new viewing platform, ‘Top Mountain Star’, at 3080 metres with its panorama bar, there is a spectacular view of the Otzaler Alps.
It’s a fantastic skiing area, with guaranteed snow, for beginners and experienced skiers alike and certainly for families. The varied, sunny, broad pistes and ski lifts, without waiting times, will ensure an unforgettable winter sports holiday. More fun parks have been created for snowboarders and for the really daring there is the Hohe Mut, the wildest ‘’ buckle piste’’ in the whole of Austria. This skiing area is less suitable for langlaufen but there are, however, simple routes in both places. Walkers are certainly catered for because it’s a lovely walk, through the beautiful birch forest, from Obergurgl to Hochgurgl (and back again of course!)
